To protect and preserve the endowments of nature, Nepal has established several protected areas since 1973. Nepal Government Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation has been committed to the conservation of wildlife and vegetation by managing all the protected areas in Nepal. Which include 12 National Parks, 1 Wildlife reserve, 6 Conservation Areas, 10 Ramsar Sites, and 1 hunting reserve.

The Terai, mid-hills, and high mountains of Nepal covered with forested lands include 36 types of vegetation, 1120 varieties of non-flowering plants, 5160 varieties of flowering plants, 181 mammals, 844 birds, 100 reptiles, 43 amphibian, 185 freshwater fish, and 645 butterfly species. Recognizing this enormity of vast biodiversity the Nepalese government has been working on the establishment of protected areas. So far, the government has succeeded in establishing these protected areas in three different ecological zones of Nepal.
