World Rhino Day
Every year, September 22 is celebrated as World Rhino Day worldwide to raise awareness about the five Rhino Species namely Greater One-horned Rhino, Sumatran Rhino, Javan Rhino, Black Rhino, and White Rhino. This day is the day to unite all the NGOs and INGO, wildlife organizations, conservation, and research centers, zoos, and environmentalists to discuss ways to protect the majestic creatures and educate the people about their importance in the ecosystem.
In 2010, World Wildlife Fund- South Africa declared September 22 as World Rhino Day. As usual, on September 22, 2022. Nepal is also celebrating World Rhino Day with the theme of this year “Five Rhino Species Forever”. Rhino is on the verge of extinction due to poaching, deforestation, industrialization, climate change, and disturbance in their natural habitats. It is important to raise awareness among the people regarding the vulnerability of this creature worldwide. Today, Sumatran, Javan, and Black species of rhino are supposed to be critically endangered.
Greater One-horned Rhinoceros is only found in Nepal and northeast Nepal. A total of around 3,700 rhinos are recorded in both India and Nepal. The population of Rhino in Nepal has increased by 16% according to the National Rhino Count 2021. As compared to the previous census in 2015, National Rhino Count had counted 645 rhinos. And increased by 107 rhinos resulting in 752 individuals as a whole by 2021. Out of these, 694 are in Chitwan, 38 in Bardia, 17 in Shuklaphata, and 3 in Para National Parks and their surrounding areas. The rise in their numbers exemplifies how actively Nepal is participating in the protection of rhinos and flourishing awareness among people all around the globe.
